The Power of the High Five

By Heidi Jones | June 6, 2017

You have heard this phrase: the power of touch.  Right?

But, what does it actually mean?  The short answer is: a lot, actually.

In nearly every workout class, you will hear the coach at some point say, ‘ok, turn to the person next to you and give them a high-5!’

Well, as it turns out, this isn’t just hyperbole.  Rather, it’s a researched and proven way to have a profound effect on you and your workout buddy.

You see, when you do any version of a dap (fist bump, bro embrace, or high-five), it is in that moment of touch that a psychological effect is created in the giver and the receiver.

The shoulder bump or high-5 helps us form and sustain intimate bonds, affects the camaraderie of a group  and ultimately helps to determine the success of its players or team.

How, you ask?

Numerous research studies show that the power of touch alieves anxiety and decreases cortisol levels.  It also triggers the release of oxytocin, which is a hormone that helps to create a sense of trust in one another.

The cool thing about this creation of trust is that it encourages teammates to take intelligent risks and push the performance envelope to ultimate success.

So, the next time a coach asks you to high-5 your neighbor, take her up on that request.  Because the power of this moment is just that…powerful!
